The newly installed marker to honor Dorothy Roe, a trailblazer of women’s athletics at Macomb High, has been recently placed in the Memorial Garden that was dedicated in her memory, thanks to efforts from Roe’s family and Community News Brief’s writer, Cheryl Douglas. Douglas had first approached Macomb School District to request a rename of Washington Street Gym, where MHS girls’ basketball and volleyball teams practice and play, to the Dorothy Roe Gymnasium.
Macomb Unit School District No. 185 Superintendent Mark Twomey formed a committee to review the request, and discovered that a garden had been named in Roe’s honor shortly after her death Oct.
9, 1985. However, it was also discovered that the garden bore no marker and had not been maintained over the years.
But now, thanks to Douglas’ fortitude to honor her former teacher and mentor, the garden is being refreshed.
