The Bushnell-Prairie City football squad ran into a buzzsaw Friday night at Amboy High School.
Facing the defending Illinois 8-Man Football Association state champion Clippers on their home turf, the Spartans proved to be no match as the Amboy/LaMoille/Ohio coop rolled to a 56-6 I8FA West Division victory.
Amboy improved to 2-1 on the season, while B-PC dropped to 0-3. It was the division opener for both teams.
Set up by a long kickoff return, the Clippers scored on their first offensive play, a nine-yard run by Jose Lopez. Colt McCoy added the two-point conversion run and Amboy led 8-0 just 18 seconds into the game.
B-PC fumbled on its second offensive play and Caden Heath picked up the loose ball and returned it 32 yards for an Amboy TD.
Lopez added the PAT run that made it 16-0 with 11:28 still on the clock in the opening period.
Amboy made it 24-0 when quarterback Tanner Welch connected with Cody Winn for a 71-yard pitch and catch. McCoy followed with the PAT run.
Welch thn scored on a 48-yard run and completed a pass to Winn for the PAT that made it 32-0.
The Spartans got on the board when Jonavan Harrell broke free for a 60 yard touchdown run. The PAT pass failed, leaving Amboy with a 32-6 lead.
But the Clippers scored two more times before the end of the first quarter.
McCoy ran for a 44-yard TD and Lopez added a 26-yard run. Both PATs were successful and Amboy led 48-6 at the end of the opening period.
The hosts tallied their final score early in the second quarter on Caiden Heath’s 44-yard run and PAT conversion.
B-PC finished with 76 yards rushing on 24 carries. Parker Guppy recorded 51 yards on nine carries, while Harrell finished with 43 yards on six carries.
Guppy finished 0-for-5 passing with one interception. On defense, Harrell finished with eight total tackles, followed by Kaleb Spears with seven.
Landon Lear and Keegan Gillette added three tackles each. The Spartans return home this week, hosting Galva (1-2) in an I8FA West Division contest.
The Wildcats lost to Kirkland Hiawatha 26-22 in their season opener before defeating Peoria Heights 62-12 in week two.
Galva lost its division opener last week to visiting Flanagan- Cornell/Woodland 60-25.
