MHS Volleyball Defeats

Hornets; Post 1-4 Record At Williamsville

By Shelby Burget

The Macomb High varsity volleyball squad began a busy weekend of play Thursday, recording a 25-9, 25-20 victory over Brown County at Mt. Sterling.

Cadence Hotz and Jordan Hines paced the Macomb hitting attack with six and five kills respectively.

Sophie Wilson added 18 set assists, eight digs and three service aces, while Emily Westerhold recorded 10 digs.

On Friday and Saturday, the Bombers were in Williamsville to take part in the Bullet Invitational.

Starting pool play Friday evening, the Bombers lost to Rochester 25-22, 25-9 and Newark 25-21, 15-25, 15-13.

On Saturday, Macomb completed pool play, losing to Monticello 21-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Moving into White bracket play, MHS lost to Orion 25-16, 25-18 before wrapping up competition with a 25-10, 25-8 victory over University High.

Stat leaders in the tournament for the Bombers included the following.

Hines - 27 kills, eight service aces and 41 digs. Westerhold - nine service aces and 30 digs. Wilson - 66 set assists, four service aces and 35 digs. “We played against some very strong teams this weekend,” said MHS coach Hillary Humes. “Our record doesn’t reflect on how well we competed and how close the sets were.”

“We could have been very well in the Gold or Silver bracket, but we made too many unforced errors late in the sets.”

“Our pass and serve game is strong right now,” she added. “We’re forcing these teams into out of system. Now, we need to find ways to improve our offense, so we’re scoring on those out of system opportunities.”

“It’s tough to lose, especially so many games in one weekend,” said Humes. “But we’re seeing great competition that we don’t get to play against in the regular season. These are the caliber of teams we’ll see in the postseason, and to know that we can compete with them should leave an encouraging impact on us.”

The Bombers are now 7-7 on the season and will return to action Tuesday at Farmington.
