Western Illinois broke through for its first victory of the season, routing Valparaiso 51-30 Saturday night at Hanson Field. The Leathernecks (1-2) delivered their most potent offensive performance of the year, jumping out to a commanding lead and never looking back.
Markell Holman set the tone with a 3-yard touchdown run on WIU’s opening drive. Quarterback Chris Irvin then took over, throwing three touchdown passes — including a 29-yard strike to Demari Davis and a 15-yard connection to Holman — and rushing for another score. By halftime, Western Illinois led 28-3.
The Leathernecks extended their advantage in the third quarter as Irvin found Alex Williams for a 17-yard touchdown, and Antonio Chadha added a 48-yard field goal. Brinston Williams and Antwon McKay Jr. also scored rushing and receiving touchdowns in the second half to seal the win.
Irvin finished 13 of 20 for 247 yards and three passing touchdowns, adding a rushing touchdown. Davis caught five passes for 106 yards and a score. Holman contributed 74 rushing yards plus a receiving touchdown, while Brinston Williams rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Western Illinois forced three fumbles and recorded seven tackles for loss. Christian Pierce led with three tackles, and Brock Sperling added a sack.
Valparaiso scored twice late, including a 100-yard kickoff return, but the early Leatherneck dominance was too much to overcome.
Western Illinois travels to Eastern Washington next Saturday for its next game.
