Big 2nd Quarter Propels Bombers Past Titans

The Macomb High football scored early in its LincolnLand Large School School Division contest against West Hancock Friday evening.

The second quarter, it scored often, putting up 28 points on the scoreboard.

The end result was a 42-0 victory over the Titans at Jim Repplinger Field in Hamilton.

Macomb improved to 2-0 on the season, while West Hancock dropped to 0-2.

The Bombers needed just two minutes to score the game’s first touchdown.

A 43-yard pass from quarterback Kaden Knupp to Carter Havens on Macomb’s third play set up Drake May’s two-yard touchdown run.

Hayden Katz booted the first of his six point-after-touchdown kicks, giving the Bombers a 7-0 lead.

Macomb seized command of the contest in the second period, scoring four times within a span of just over seven minutes.

The first two TDs came within 34 seconds of each other.

Starting at their own 22, the Bombers needed just three plays to cover 78 yards.

A 27-yard pass from Knupp to Drew Watson set up a 51-yard TD run by Havens that made it 14-0 with 7:34 left before halftime.

On West Hancock’s next drive, Watson intercepted a Brayden Carter pass and returned it 56 yards for the touchdown. The Katz PAT made it 21-0.

The Bombers recovered the ensuing kick at the West Hancock 31, but turned the ball over on downs at the 26.

A shanked punt by the Titans gave MHS possession at the West Hancock 49. Three plays later, May broke free for a 30-yard TD run, upping the Bomber lead to 28-0 with 2:25 left before halftime.

But Macomb was not finished yet. The Titans reached the Bomber 35-yard line on their next possession before turning the ball over on downs with one minute to go before intermission.

Macomb used a 23-yard run by Havens and a 28-yard pass from Knupp to Kyler Norton to set up an eight-yard pass from Knupp to Norton for the score.

That upped Macomb’s lead to 35-0 with 11 seconds left before halftime.

Macomb’s final touchdown came at the 3:45 mark of the third period on a four-yard run by May.

Knupp completed 6-of-11 passes for 155 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Watson had three catches for 76 yards, while Norton added two grabs for 36 yards and a score.

Havens added one catch for 43 yards.

May rushed for 58 yards on 10 carries, scoring three touchdowns. Havens added four carries for 91 yards and a score.

Defensively, May recorded a team-leading 16 total tackles, including six solo stops.

Blaze Howell added six total tackles, followed by Drake Taber with five and Watson with four.

Carter was 10-of-28 passing for the Titans, finishing with 73 yards.

Hunter Froman had five catches for 45 yards, while Jess Scott added three catches for 25 yards.

Chandler Dadant led the Titan ground attack with 56 yards rushing on 19 carries. Scott added 41 yards on eight carries.

Froman chipped in 31 yards on two carries.

The Bombers play their home opener this week, hosting Illini West.

Both teams enter with a 2-0 record, and along with Farmington are the lone unbeaten teams in the division.
