Following a busy tournament Saturday, the Macomb High volleyball squad returned to action at Astoria Wednesday evening, defeating host South Fulton 25-17, 25-19 in a Prairieland Conference South Division contest.

MHS improved to 4-3 overall, while South Fulton dropped to 1-2.

It was the conference opener for both teams.

The first set saw Macomb lead 12-11 before a key four-point run gave the Bombers some breathing room.

“We really found a good rhythm,” said MHS coach Hillary Humes. “And we were really scrappy, too. There were a lot of long rallies.”

The visitors controlled set two, building a 23-11 advantage before the Rebels narrowed the gap, slicing the deficit to 24-19 before a service error by South Fulton closed out the match.

“You can tell they’ve been putting in the work upping their game,” said Humes of South Fulton.

“They were scrappy,” she added. “We took a lot of good swings that we thought were down and they just kept it in play.”

But as always, the key for the Bombers was to control tempo on their own side of the net, along with their effort, hustle and communication.

“The big one for us is just limiting our errors,” said Humes. “But it’s all easy things we can fix.”

Jordan Hines had seven kills and nine digs for Macomb, while Sophie Wilson handed out 19 set assists.

Emily Westerhold finished with seven digs and eight service points, while Jersee Mills added five digs and 10 service points for the Bombers.

The Macomb High JV squad improved to 2-0 on the season, rallying for a 19-25, 25-13, 25-22 victory.

The Bombers return to action on Sept. 10, hosting Monmouth-Roseville for freshman, sophomore and varsity matches at MHS starting at 5 p.m.
