Commission Approves Facade Upgrades for Three Downtown Businesses

The Macomb Historic Preservation Commission last week approved exterior improvements for three downtown businesses aimed at refreshing their appearances while preserving the district’s historic character.

At 8 West Side Square, The Cafe will get a new metal awning, fresh paint, new doors, and updated signage. Owners Vicki and Matt Kipling emphasized the changes are cosmetic, not structural. “Our plan is not to rebuild,” Vicki Kipling said. Community Development Director Miranda Lambert noted the new paint will match neighboring buildings, and the awning will display a new business logo. Commissioner Laura Dively praised the plans, saying, “I think it looks really sharp.” The Kiplings also acknowledged the building’s roof will eventually need replacement.

At 32 West Side Square, the law firm Bougher, Krisher & Clark will repaint its facade dark gray with light gray trim. Ryan Krisher said some exterior materials are deteriorating and repairs will align with other downtown properties. Attorney Stephanie Hilton said no structural changes are planned, though new lighting will be added.

Finally, 309 Marketplace at 129 North Randolph Street will see new paint and signage. Partner Seth Minter said window and door trim will change from silver to black, with no structural or awning modifications. The new sign will be displayed inside the window rather than hanging outside.

Commission Chairman Dennis Danowski and Commissioner Jan Armstrong thanked all applicants for their efforts to enhance the square’s appearance.
