The West Prairie High School volleyball squad posted a 1-4 record at Saturday’s Macomb High Volleyball Classic played at Brophy Hall on the campus of Western Illinois University.
In pool play, the Cyclones lost to Limestone, last year’s Class 3A state runner up, 25-6, 25-10 to open play.
West Prairie then lost to Kewanee High 25-22, 25-22 and Pleasant Plains 25-16, 25-23.
“We have a freshman and a sophomore at outside hitter and they are learning a lot,” said West Prairie coach Tyler Snyder. “To try to play at such a high level against really good teams is really a trial by fire.”
In bracket play, West Prairie downed Ridgewood 25-12, 25-12 before dropping a 22-25, 25-22, 16-14 to United, a team the Cyclones defeated in their season opener on Aug. 26.
“Overall I was pretty pleased with the way they played,” said Snyder. “They were pretty competitive. They pushed hard there in match five.”
“I thought we did a pretty good job of staying positive.”
“We just had some unforced errors,” he added of the team’s match against United. “Uncharacteristic errors from players that usually make those plays.”
“They were tired, but we have to execute in those situations,” Snyder added.
Thursday’s Results Back on Aug. 28, West Prairie and Bushnell- Prairie City were defeated in road contests.
West Prairie lost its Prairieland Conference South Division opener to Havana 25-21, 25-17.
Meanwhile B-PC lost at Manito to host Midwest Central 25-11, 25-23 in a non-conference contest.
West Prairie (2-5) returns to tournament action this week, playing in the Lady Suns Classic at Augusta.
The Cyclones are scheduled to play Rushville- Industry on Tuesday, Mendon Unity on Wednesday and Barry Western on Thursday in pool play. The tournament concludes on Sept. 6.
B-PC (0-2) will return to the road this week, playing at Knoxville on Tuesday and Monmouth United on Thursday.
