Clugston Home 421 S. Lafayette Street - Macomb
According to the local newspaper on February 18, 1870, Mr. Clugston had started construction of his nice residence in the southern part of Macomb. John Byers and Dorothy Alice (nee Reed) Clugston built this home after having purchased the lot on November 3, 1868.
The two were married in 1851 in Pittsburg, PA. After this marriage he located to Decaturville, TN where he established a saddle and harness business, which continued until the beginning of the Civil War. At this time, he moved to Macomb, IL. From here he went to Pittsburg, Pa, where he was employed by the government on saddlery work for a year and a half. Returning to Macomb in 1865, he worked as a venireman for a couple of years, later going into the harness business from which he permanently retired in 1870. The following year he engaged in the grocery business with Thomas Farley and continued the business alone, for another year. They were members of the Christian Church in Macomb and had 5 children with one daughter dying at the age of two years. This home still exists today.
