A Macomb man currently lodged and awaiting trial for allegedly shooting two Macomb police officers during a lengthy standoff nearly one year ago was back in court Aug. 5 for another pre-trial hearing.
Michael Jarard, the attorney for Shaiking Mathis, who at an earlier hearing took a delay on the speedy trial act, filed a motion to suppress Aug. 4. At the Aug. 5 pre-trial, a hearing for the motion to suppress was set for Sept. 12. A motion to suppress seeks to exclude certain evidence from being presented at trial. This motion is typically filed when the defense believes the evidence was obtained illegally or in violation of the defendant's constitutional rights. If granted, the evidence cannot be used against the defendant during the trial.
Mathis is accused of shooting Det. Nick Severs and Sgt. J.P. McLaughlin at his Macomb residence Sept. 4, 2024 when the pair were attempting to serve a search warrant for a reported sexual assault that allegedly took place at his 309 N. Normal St. residence earlier that day. Following extensive negotiations after a 20-hour standoff with law enforcement, Mathis, now 39, surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. He has been charged with four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Mathis has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial.
