Big Billy Party to Honor Life, Career of Billy Clow Set for Aug. 21

The "vibrant force of life, his energy, spirit, and heart" will be remembered Thursday, Aug. 21 when the 'Big Billy Party' takes place from 5:30-9 p.m. at Park Place in Macomb to honor the life and legacy of Western Illinois University Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Billy Clow, who passed away April 17.

The event will feature the Marching Leathernecks, as well as the posthumous presentation of the 2025 Council of Administrative Personnel (COAP) Employee of the Year award.

"Billy Clow's lasting impact on Western Illinois University, the Goldfarb Center for Performing Arts, his colleagues, friends and especially students marks just the beginning of his lasting legacy of light, optimism and a physical place for community celebration of the arts in our region," WIU President Kristi Mindrup said.

WIU Interim Provost Mark Mossman added that Clow had every characteristic required of an excellent dean: he was an advocate, a tireless leader and the heart and soul of his college.

"Billy Clow also had every characteristic required of an excellent colleague, friend and parent: he was generous with his time; he was always willing to help out when someone was in need; and he was profoundly proud of his kids," Mossman added.

Clow began his career at Western in 2012 as the Dean of COFAC. In 2018, he was named interim provost, and he returned to his role as Dean of COFAC in 2022.

Clow is survived by his wife, Tammy Killian; his mother, Jeannine Clow of Columbia, MO; his children, Edan Clow, Cullen Clow, Addison Clow and Kate Killian, all of Macomb; his brother, Guy Clow, and sister, Laura Clow, both of Columbia, MO.

Memorial contributions in Billy's honor may be made to the Goldfarb Center for Performing Arts at Western Illinois University. Contributions may be sent to WIU Foundation & Development, 303 Sherman Hall, 1 University Circle, Macomb, IL 61455 or visit wiu.edu/honorbilly.

Reporter's Note: As the (now-retired) assistant VP of Western's former Division of Communication, Marketing and Media Relations, I had the honor and privilege of working with Billy Clow since he joined the institution in 2012. He was a friend, a mentor, and a trusted colleague to so many of us, and above all, he was a family man who gave his all for his children and wife. His memory will forever live on at Western and beyond because of his tireless efforts; advocacy for the arts, social justice and education; compassion, and humor.
