The Macomb Beautiful Association Business Beautification Awards have been announced for 2025.
The two winning properties were chosen as outstanding examples of landscaping in front of their properties as prescribed by the city of Macomb's business ordinance. One is a well established building which has maintained an attractive landscape for decades and the other is a new building with a fresh and welcoming new landscape. Both are lovely representations of the beauty our hometown extends to those who live, work, play and visit!
403 W. Jackson St-Vitales Restaurant and Pizzeria Vitales Restaurant opened for business in 1980, forty- five years ago. For over twenty-five years, Elsner’s Midwest Ornamental Nursery has taken over care of the landscaping. In front of the building on the north side are Spirea and Euonymus. Throughout the rest of the garden there is golden privet, clematis, roses, coreopsis and day lilies among others. In the back parking lot along Washington Street, a dwarf tree is surrounded by hydrangeas, day lilies and roses.
533 East Grant Street MDH Community Pharmacy MDH held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Community Pharmacy in May of 2023. After a 20-month construction project, the Community Pharmacy was complete and opened its doors on January 15, 2025.
Having a beautiful, nearly 10,000 square foot building, fully ready to meet the pharmacy needs of patients, is very exciting, but we all know first impressions matter and the surrounding landscape enhanced the building’s appeal even further. MDH wanted the exterior to have a well-maintained, ecofriendly landscaping.
Thoughtfully selected plantings include Bobo and Annabelle Hydrangeas which typically bloom late spring and last through the summer. To add a pop of color there are Red and Pink Drift Roses which thrive in full sun. Taunton Yew, a versatile plant, was included as an accent plant that could tolerate the Illinois summer heat. Mixed in is Karl Forester grass and Arrowwood Viburnum shrubs.
For height, shade, and color they included Show Time Crabapple and Spring Snow Crabapple trees with a sweet-smelling bloom.
All set against a clean, low-maintenance river rock base to tie in with landscaping all over campus.
To complete the look, another Rocky was added in front of the pharmacy to proudly show the support for Western Illinois University and the community.
