After extensive debate, the Colchester City Council voted Monday, August 4, 2025, to approve a new ordinance raising water rates for customers served by the city’s water system. The system sources its water from the City of Macomb, which primarily draws from Spring Lake and a deep well.
The new ordinance, 202511, sets a minimum monthly water charge of $25 for the first 1,000 gallons. Usage beyond that will be billed at $9.68 per additional 1,000 gallons within city limits. For customers outside the corporate limits, the minimum charge remains $25, but the rate for additional water increases to $14.52 per 1,000 gallons. The ordinance will take effect 30 days after passage unless otherwise specified.
In other business, the council approved a $106,452 bid from Hood Construction for road resurfacing projects funded by Motor Fuel Tax revenues. The work, delayed until after Labor Day celebrations, will improve portions of Elizabeth, Coal, Fulton, and Hun Streets, as well as sections of Macomb and East Depot Streets.
Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming Labor Day festival, running Aug. 28–31, are underway. K&S Southern Midways will provide carnival rides and games, featuring six or seven rides suitable for all ages. Deliver the Party will offer inflatable attractions and obstacle courses.
Advance tickets are now available at City Hall and Colchester United Community Bank.
