The dedication of a new plaque at the C.T. Vivian mural in downtown Macomb Friday morning paid further reverence to the civil rights leader and Western Illinois University alumnus.
The new monument is the most recent project by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the C.T. Vivian Foundation of Macomb.
The plaque gives a history of Vivian's civil rights work.
The dedication is part of Alpha Phi Alpha's 'College for the Better Making of Men' project being held throughout Illinois, which focuses on training college leaders, and preparing students for professional life in the example set by Vivian, a fraternity alum.
Several dozen Alpha Phi Alpha members attended the dedication, after meeting with Macomb Mayor Mike Inman on Thursday evening.
Inman said he was proud to be part of the dedication, before reading a proclamation.
'You're all outstanding people, and the leadership that you've shown through this organization is remarkable,' he said.
The event was led by Byron K. Oden-Shabazz, president and founder of the C.T. Vivian Foundation of Macomb, who remarked on the support and turnout from Alpha Phi Alpha.
Following the dedication, the group handed out backpacks and school supplies to children in attendance.
