Important Bicycle Safety Rules

The Summer months mean more people are out on bicycles, including more children. Did you know bicyclists must follow the same traffic laws as vehicles if ridden on the roadway? If you regularly ride your bicycle or are thinking of doing so, please familiarize yourself with the rules outlined in the informational guide provided by the Illinois Secretary of State at www.ilsos.gov/ publications/pdf_publications/dsd_a143.pdf The guidelines include: 1. Be sure you wear a helmet and adjust it to fit properly. 2. It's always safest to ride on the sidewalk or a designated bike lane.

3. Wear bright colors and utilize lights, especially while riding at night or early in the morning.

4. Obey the rules of the road if riding on the roadway. 5. Stop at intersections and use a hand/arm signal when turning.

6. Equip your bike with a bell or horn to alert others of hazards.
