Macomb Council Reviews Special Census, Approves Infrastructure and Marketing Plans

Macomb’s special census uncovered 494 new residents, unlocking more than $627,000 in funding over six years, City Administrator Scott Coker told the city council Monday.

The census cost $124,337—far less than the $361,319 advance payment requested by the U.S. Census Bureau—resulting in a refund of $239,682 to the city. “This updated population count means more resources for city services and projects,” Coker said.

Honoring historic milestones

The council also approved a resolution supporting the Illinois America250 Commemoration, part of the national celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. The year will also mark McDonough County’s bicentennial, which Macomb plans to honor alongside the national milestone.

Thorpe Memorial Park Project Aldermen accepted an $85,716 bid from Housewright Construction to build a concrete sidewalk at Bill Thorpe Memorial Park. Mayor Mike Inman described the project as both a walking path and a city sidewalk extension.

Community Development Director Miranda Lambert said the project budget includes $600,000 from her department, $18,110 in community donations, and $20,000 from the East Side Tax Increment Finance District.

Storyboards along the path will share the story of Bill Thorpe, Macomb’s first African- American police officer.

Coker added that the Public Works Department will plant trees in the park, saying, “It will be a nice park.”

Road resurfacing project approved

The council awarded a $300,261 contract to Laverdiere Construction for the first phase of the 2025-2026 road improvement project.

Public Works Director Alice Ohrtmann said the work will resurface Maple Avenue, Wigwam Hollow Road, and the alley between Carroll Street and U.S. 136 using a “mill and fill” process with a chip-sealed surface. “These streets are heavily traveled and need this extra care,” Ohrtmann said.

Business and marketing initiatives The council approved a restaurant liquor license for Dat Wing Spot at 928 West Jackson Street, with a condition proposed by Alderman Dave Dorsett to pause any live entertainment until required parking is verified.

Additionally, the council authorized a request for proposals to develop a city marketing plan aligned with Macomb’s strategic plan. The city has budgeted $25,000 for marketing, with the Macomb Park District contributing $20,000.
