In the summer of 2004, Gil Belles (pictured) suggested the Friends of the Macomb Public Library give away free books at the Amtrak Train Station as a public service. Permission was granted and within a few days a book rack was in place and filled with books. The book rack has been filled every week since then with paperbacks donated for book sales but haven't sold or aren't saleable. Current Friends of the Library volunteers this year include Barrie McVey, Marcia Moulden (coordinator), Alison Vawter, Terry Wallick and Susan Sckoonover. While there has not been an official count, thousands of books have been given away and the demand for more continues.
